For 22 years Susan has served as an Associate Judge hearing District & County Court at Law cases – especially those centering around family law and child support. In her career, Susan has traveled to hear cases in over 20 counties from Fort Davis to Del Rio, and from Rankin to Seguin. She was appointed to the bench in 1991 and has served proudly since then.
Education:
Susan is a native of the Texas Hill Country and a proud graduate of Tivy High School. She attended the University of Texas in Austin before transferring to Columbia University in New York, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She attended law school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and was admitted to the bar in 1985.
Experience:
Before her appointment to the Associate Judge’s bench, Susan practiced law in Kerrville, in the family law firm of Harris and Harris – her parents were local attorneys Lavern and Faye Harris. Susan then worked as an attorney-mediator and served as a speaker for the Hill Country Dispute Resolution Mediation Training Seminars.
I currently hear cases for 9 District Judges and 4 County Court at Law Judges in 10 counties. I have almost three decades of experience in the legal profession and I feel very confident that I am ready to accept the responsibility of this new position. I know Kerr County residents appreciate the years of service of Judge Brown, he has been an important part of the legal history of Kerr County.
Legacy:
Susan is a member of the Kerr County Bar Association and the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. She has served on the Faculty Community Advisory Committee for the Kerrville Independent School District and served with PTO organizations in our local schools.
Texas is #1 in the Nation in Child Support Collection: $3.6 Billion dollars in 2013.
Kerr County alone collected $5,680,000 Million dollars in Child Support in 2013.
I am proud to be part of the team that collects more child support than any other state in the nation…Our goal is to help families get off of welfare, assist them in becoming self-sufficient and save taxpayers money.
Family:
Mother of two sons: Sam, a junior at Texas A&M and Matthew, a senior at Tivy High School. Susan Harris is a member of the Kerrville Area Aggie Mom’s Club.
In the past she has served as the board president of the Hill Country Crisis Council and was a member of the Kerrville Junior Service Guild and the Executive Women’s Club.
